Engraved map of the East Coast of North America, hand-colored in outline, image 387 x 504 mm (487 x 587 mm sheet). From the Carolinas to Nova Scotia, French text on verso. (Two clean internal splits.) FIRST STATE. "This influential map is derived from the less well circulated Johannes de Laet of 1630" which is "of extreme importance, being the first printed to use the names 'Manbattes' (Manhattan) and N. Amsterdam" (Burden). Janssonius popularized de Laet's map which "is arguably the finest description of the Americas in the seventeenth century." The map first appeared in Jansson's Nouvel Atlas .
