Janson, Charles WilliamThe Stranger in America: Containing Observations Made During a Long Residence in That Country, on the Genius, Manners and Customs of the People of the United States. London: Printed for James Cundee, 1807 4to (284 x 220 mm). Engraved title, nine colored plates, plan of Philadelphia, 6 pp. advertisements; minor foxing and toning to text, a few plates lightly soiled. Contemporary drab boards; rebacked, preserving portion of the original spine, corners renewed, boards somewhat soiled and worn. First edition, a rare copy with colored plates, generally found in sepia only The plates depict Mount Vernon, Boston Harbor, New York City's Hellgate as well as many views of Philadelphia. The latter were in the main copied from William Birch's City of Philadelphia, including the City and Port from Kensington, the plan of Philadelphia, Second Street North from Market Street, the Bank of the United States, and the procession commemorating the death of George Washington The appendix to the book contains what appears to be the first British printing of Thomas Jefferson's December 1806 message announcing the completion of the Lewis and Clark expedition, as well as other western explorations.
