Contemporary red morocco gilt by Jean Philippe Belz, covers with triple fillet border, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second, dated in the third, the other compartments with repeat decoration built up from a central lozenge and surrounding cornerpieces, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Provenance : Lucien Double (penciled inscription on title); quote from Janin in an unknown hand. A VERY FINE COPY OF JANIN'S WELL-KNOWN WORK: LIMITED TO 204 COPIES AND HERE BOUND IN RED MOROCCO. The binding is signed 'Belz-Niedrée': Belz (1831-1917) was one of the great 19th-century finishers. He entered Niedrée's atelier in 1854, and after the latter's death in 1864, continued to work under their combined names until retiring in 1880.
