The Czech surrealist director's feature film is an original, imaginative rendition of the myth of Faust, drawing on motifs from the works of Marlow, Goethe, Grabbe, Gounod and folk puppet theater. The combination of live-action and stop-motion footage is augmented by puppetry. The film received the Czech Lion Award for Best Artistic Contribution to Czech Cinema, Best Sound and Best Actor in a Leading Role.
