Provenance : James Gilvarry (his sale Christie's New York, 7 February 1986, lot 150). ON ROBERT LOUS STEVENSON, WHO THINKS IT "BETTER TO BE BURIED ALIVE IN SAMOA THAN BURIED DEAD IN ENGLAND" "I am very glad to hear you are in London...I hope your 'short time' will last till toward the middle of August -- otherwise I fear I shall miss you...I am quite yearning for late news of R[obert] L[ouis] S[tevenson] & for the authentic truth on the subject of his return in the autumn & the subsequent purchase & subsequent settlement -- or burial -- alive (most damnable thought) in the abominable Samoa. Of course, one forsees his argument: that it is better to be buried alive in Samoa than to be buried dead in England -- but it is all non the less dreary -- for us..." Apparently unpublished, not in Letters, ed. Edel.
