"I send you... my Seventh Number of The Awkward Age -- which, I blush to say, violates absurdly my promise of [its] consisting but of 2 chapters. It consists of three - & I don't know that I can even plead that they are exceptionally short. I don't know that I can do anything but leave the face in its native & unattended awkwardness..." Nelson was the editor of Harper's Weekly , in which The Awkward Age was serialized from 1 October 1898 to 7 January 1899. Apparently unpublished, not in Letters, ed. Edel. Provenance : James Gilvarry (his sale Christie's New York, 7 February 1986, lot 156).
