Beschreibung:

Silk ribbon, 2.5 x 7 in., framed to 5.25 x 9.5 in., featuring a portrait of James Buchanan at center, with text "For President / James Buchanan" printed above and "For Vice-President / John C. Breckinridge / We Po'ked 'em in '44, / We Pierced 'em in '52, / And we'll 'Buck 'em; in '56." printed below. Philadelphia: Johnson, Pr., ca 1856. The playful verse featured here refers to the victory of President James K. Polk over Whig candidate Henry Clay in 1844, and Franklin Pierce over Whig candidate General Winfield Scott in 1852. The last line refers to a common nickname for the 1856 Democratic presidential hopeful, "Old Buck." Condition: Ribbon not inspected outside of frame. Ribbon with surface soil and some spots of discoloration, especially along upper edge (upper 0.5 in. appears to have a darker color, perhaps ribbon fabric is thinner there) and extreme left edge, a couple of creases to fabric, and some possible pen marks to right of portrait.
