ORIGINAL PENCIL, PEN AND WATERCOLOUR TITLE, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE (BY FRANZ BAUER?) AND 264 ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR PLATES, 2 folding, captions in pencil. (Occasional very slight soiling, small tears in folding plates.) Contemporary diced russia, gilt, the covers with decorative border of quadruple fillets, Greek-key pattern roll, an inner roll of anthemion and scrolling foliage, square corner tool, a pineapple tool at the inner corners, the spine in seven compartments with double raised bands, lettered in one, the others tooled in gilt with various small tools, including roundels and some pointillé work, turn-ins with gilt Greek-key pattern roll, g.e., by CHRISTIAN KALTHOEBER with his orange label (joints a little weak and rubbed, slight old scuffing to upper cover). Provenance : George Hibbert (sale: Evans, 16th March to 25th May 1829. Sold for #31:10:0 to; Payne and Foss (P. & F. Acquisitions, p.53). A FINE COPY OF THIS DE LUXE ISSUE, ONE OF AT MOST 18 COPIES, each with a unique title page which 'are (as far as reported in the literature) by Franz Bauer.' (Stafleu). 'Copies exist in London (Kew; Lindley Library; British Museum in Bankseian and King's Libraries; British Museum (Nat. Hist.); Haarlem, Cambridge, Mass.; Washington, D. C. and New York; others are recorded by F. Wilshear in J. Bot (London) , 51; 140 (1913) as being then in Vienna, Berlin and Dresden; another one is known to be in private hands' ( Great Flower Books p.61). The watercolours are direct copies of Jacquin's originals, without any engraved outline, produced for the 1763 work of the same name. Jacquin evidently felt that the engraved plates in that work did not do his originals justice, and therefore issued the present work with a slightly expanded text and 262 watercolours as against 184 engraved plates: a more fitting memorial of his researches on Carribean flora.
