Proclamation by President Andrew Jackson President of the United States. Whereas, a convention assembled in the State of South Carolina.... City of Washington: Printed at the Office of the Boston Statesman, by True and Greene, December 10, 1832. Broadside printed on satin (660 x 510 mm). Text in 7 columns within Greek-key border. Edges a bit soiled and frayed, 1 inch repaired tear to column 4. IMPORTANT BROADSIDE ADDRESSING THE NULLIFICATION CRISIS, AND ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EARLY ATTESTATIONS OF PRIORITY OF FEDERAL OVER STATE LAW. Jackson responds to South Carolina's attempt to nullify several acts and parts of acts of Congress regarding the imposition of duties. South Carolina's attempt to do so launched a Constitutional crisis, and Jackson here responds very strongly: "the power to annul a law of the United States, assumed by one state, incompatible with the existence of the Union, contradicted expressly by the letter of the Constitution, unauthorized by its spirit, inconsistent with every principle on which it was founded, and destructive of the great object for which it was formed." Most copies were printed in a folio format on paper, and just a few were printed on satin. Sabin 35352
