2 volumes in one, 109 and 123 pages, oblong 4to (24.8 x 32.9cm), engraved throughout, a few manuscript annotations, music-sellers label ("Chez B. Viguerie...") pasted over imprints, partly legible gilt lettering to upper cover ("BAGNO..."), contemporary green half vellum, last three leaves of second volume detached, some edges frayed, small tear with paper loss to pp.3/4, slightly affecting text, damp-staining and a tiny hole to title of first volume, splitting at hinges, binding very worn
Only three copies of the first volume are recorded by RISM; the second volume with the French title-page is not recorded at all (one copy, however, was sold in these rooms on 16 October 2012 (Meyer sale), lot 9). Three editions of the '48', each in two parts, appeared virtually simultaneously in 1801: Nägeli's Das wohltemperirte Clavier oder Präludien und Fugen durch alle Töne, which also appeared at the same time with a French title (this latter being the present edition); Hoffmeister's Le Clavecin Bien Tempéré; and an edition by Simrock (48. Préludes et Fugues...Ecrit par Sampier), this last considered to be the first edition.
