With penciled identification on verso: Thomas Torlino, Navajoe [sic]. Upon arrival at the school, the boys had their long haircuts and their clothing exchanged for Anglo style pants and jackets. Tom’s before portrait, in which he wears traditional Navajo clothing, and his after portrait, in which he wears a three-piece suit and a watch chain became an iconic example used by government officials to illustrate their hope for progress in educating and civilizing the Indians. Condition: Some remnants of adhesive on before portrait; even toning to prints.
