Addressed to Spitta at Sondershausen, the present letter of Brahms presumably dates from Spitta's time at the Gymnasium there teaching Latin and Greek (1866-1874). Formerly in the collection of the Berlin pianist and teacher Ernst Rudorff (1840-1916).
