Louvain: Anthonius Maria Bergaigne, April 1551. 8vo (156 x 96 mm). 178 ff., foliated in upper right corner in roman numerals, 2 original final blanks. Title in red and black surrounded by a border of scrolling acanthus and intertwined figures, 2 astrological woodcuts at the end of the calendar, a woodcut of David playing the harp at the opening of the psalms, printer’s device of a leopard to Z4v. Gothic type, chapter headings and initials in red. Contemporary blind-stamped calf with repeating central portrait panels neatly rebacked to style with modern morocco booklabel to spine, early vellum ms. used as internal backstrip, two brass clasps with catches. Condition : title browned, occasional spots; joints slightly cracked, small gouges to cover, corners bumped. Provenance : ink inscriptions to endpapers. [With:] SCHWOB, Sigismundus. Original blind-stamped pigskin stamped ‘DB’ and dated 1568 on front cover, with elaborately tooled borders of arabesques, David & other Biblical figures. Condition : slightly toned to margins, some foxing, wormhole through upper margin of book II; pigskin soiled, lacking clasps. An extremely rare register and index of the first edition of Luther’s works printed at Wittenberg, including later editions. [With:] LUTHER, Martin . [Works in German] . Wittenberg: Hans Lufft, 1558. Part 9 of 12 only. Title printed in red and black, large central woodcut vignette of the Crucifixion. Contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over bevelled boards with repeating portrait panels, two brass clasps and leather straps. Condition : worming to upper cover, three small gouges to upper cover revealing board underneath, pigskin rubbed, corners bumped.
