ISABELLA I, Queen of Spain . Document signed ("Yo la Reyna") as Queen, n.p., 30 October 1500. 1 page, 4to, 310 x 210 mm. (12 x 9¾ in.), text in a typical, Spanish court hand, scribe's certification "Por manda de la reyna" signed Gaspar de Trizio, at bottom a seven-line statement signed by Gaspar de Buenaguía, confirming receipt of the funds . QUEEN ISABELLA AND THE GARDENS OF "MY PALACE, THE ALHAMBRA" The Queen of Spain orders payment of costs incurred in the refurbishment of one of the greatest monuments of Islamic architecture in the west, the Alhambra palace: "Sancho de Paredes, my manservant, I order you that of the [100,000] maravedis which you, by my order, received from Antonio de Fonesca in the City of Granada, now give to Gaspar de Buenaguía [20,000] maravedis in addition to the other [20,000] maravedis you will give him for work on the garden and other things which I order be done in my house at the Alhambra in Granada, and take a letter of receipt from said Gaspar de Buenaguía..." The Alhambra, a palace and fortress built in the 13th and 14th centuries by the Moorish kings of Granada, became the property of Isabella and Ferdinand V upon the fall of the city in 1492. Extensive renovations were immediately undertaken by the sovereigns. The garden is likely to have been that of the Generalife, a villa attached to the palace and surrounded by elaborate hedges, grottos, fountains and cypress avenues, all of which survive today.
