IRELAND, John (1879-1962). Autograph music manuscript signed, a song 'Weep you no more, sad fountains' (words by John Dowland), n.p., n.d. [1906], inscribed in autograph 'for my friend Percy Bertram (this MS: carries all rights of publication: John Ireland: Dec: 22 [1]952)', annotated in another hand in pencil '1906: unpublished', 3 pages, folio (some spotting). The setting, marked 'Not too slowly' is for four unaccompanied voices, though Ireland provides an accompaniment 'for practice only'. A neat essay in a madrigal style, it sets the final lines 'Rest you then, rest, sad eyes! Melt not in weeping! While she lies sleeping Softly, now softly lies, Sleeping!' on a diminuendo from p to ppp. The words are a characteristically melancholic composition by the composer John Dowland (1603; from the Third Book of Airs ). THE SONG IS APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED AND UNLISTED.
