Title: Inscribed photograph of Charles Evan Hughes Author: Place: [n.p.] Publisher: Harris & Ewing Date: 1925 Description: Photograph, 29x18 cm (11½x7"), with matting and frame: 43x32 cm (17x12½") Sepia toned photograph Inscribed by Hughes in bottom margin to Elbert Henry Gary, namesake of Gary, Indiana. Gary was an American lawyer and a key founder of U.S. Steel in 1901: "To Hon. Elbert H. Gary, with high esteem, Charles E. Hughes." Beneath the inscription appears the date "October 19, 1925" written in ink. Charles Evans Hughes, Sr. was an American statesman, lawyer, and Republican politician from New York. He served as the 36th Governor of New York (1907–1910), Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (1910–1916), United Sates Secretary of Sate (1921–1925), a judge on the Court of International Justice (1928–1930), and the 11th Chief Justice of the United States (1930–1941). He was the Republican nominee in the 1916 U.S. Presidential election, losing narrowly to incumbent President Woodrow Wilson.
