Initial I on a leaf from an Antiphonal, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Venice, c.1430] 469 x 353mm (leaf); 122 x 90mm (body of initial). Leafy initial I and border with bird- and wolf-head terminals, in scarlet, blue, green and ochre with white tracery, on a burnished gold ground decorated with small circular punches. The leaf with seven four-line musical staves in red ink with square neumes and text in round Italian liturgical gothic script in brown ink, one pen-flourished Lombard initial on verso, with original folio number 'xv' in upper margin (cropped into border at foot of leaf). The text Ierusalem cito veni is a Responsory at Matins for the Second Sunday of Advent. This lush and flamboyant initial is a characteristic example of the foliate decoration employed in the later years of his career by Cristoforo Cortese (fl.1409-1439), the leading Venetian illuminator of his day.
