Indonesia, a folder containing correspondence letters between the early Republic of Indonesia and The American Bank Note Company, 1947-1949, the documents concers the production of new banknotes for the Republic and also touches upon the political situation at the time. The files includes 2 notes sent by Indonesia to the ABNC, a 10 and 100 rupiah from 1945 and the bromide copies of each (there was originally a 5 rupiah as well but the note is missing and only the bromides remain) and also 7 hand drawn composite essays for the 'BANK NEGARA INDONESIA', which, as far as the cataloguer is aware, was ever used in circulating banknotes. The essays are thus (all the essays come with the bromide copy): 1. Labelled as 'No.8.... 5-12-46' on the reverse, purple and green, Islamic style building at left, the Bank's logo at upper left. 2. Labelled as 'No.9.... 7-12-46' on the reverse, brown and orange on pale blue, '5' at centre, the Bank's logo to its left and right. 3. without label number on reverse, blue, green and multicolour, '5 LIMA' at centre, watermark areas at left and right', 4. Labelled as 'No.10.... 8-12-46' on the reverse, purple, blue on orange, the Bank's logo at lower centre, 5. without label number on reverse, green and red, bank title and BNI at centre, 6. Labelled as 'No.12.... 14-12-46' turqoise and orange-brown, watermark area at centre, 7. Labelled as 'No.13.... 17 Dec '46' blue, purple-brown, watermark area at centre, '25' and the Bank's logo at left and right, a most fascinating group offering a glimpse into the early years of the Indonesian Republic and of huge historical significance. The Bank Negara Indonesia was founded on 5th July 1946 and was prepared to the be Central Bank of Indonesia. However, the De Javasche Bank was eventually chosen to be the Central Bank and was renamed as Bank Indonesia as it was nationalised on 1st July 1953 and continues to issue banknotes to the present day.
