Lot of 5 Annual Reports of the Bureau of Ethnology, by Director J.W. Powell, to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, including: the First Annual Report, for the years 1879-80, published in 1881 by the Government Printing Office, 603pp plus a removable map of The State of Indiana exhibiting the lands ceded by the Indian Tribes; the Seventh Annual Report, of 1885-86, published 1891, 409pp plus a removable map of Linguistic Stocks of American Indians North of Mexico; the eighth annual report, of 1886-87, published 1891, 298pp, plus three removable diagrams of Southwest Indian villages; the ninth annual report, of 1887-88, published 1892, 617pp; and the twelfth annual report, of 1890-91, published 1894, 742pp, plus a removable map titled Distribution of Mounds in the Eastern United States. All are bound in pressed green buckram with gilt spine lettering and a gilt depiction of an Indian on front cover, and contain numerous engravings, maps, and diagrams. Condition: Binding is loose with some separation, but mostly intact. Moderate-to-heavy shelf wear. Leaves lightly toned. Most leaves, including engravings, diagrams, and maps, are in very good condition.
