A pair of painted miniatures on ivory depicting Mumtaz Mahal, the empress of India during the Mughal dynasty, unsigned with handwritten descriptive info on verso of one; 4.25 x 3 in. Mumtaz Mahal, was the name given to the Persian princess Arjumand Banu Begum, the third wife of Shah Janan. A Shia Muslim, Mumtaz Mahal died during childbirth in 1631. In memory of her, Shan Jahan built the Taj Mahal from 1632-1653 as a mausoleum for his beloved wife.
