A Narrative of the Insurrection which Happened in the Zemeedary of Banaris in the Month of August 1781, and of the Transactions of the Governor-General in that District. Calcutta: Printed by the Order of the Governor General, 1782. 4 o (315 x 237 mm). Half-title. (Misprinting affecting two pages in the appendix at end, a few leaves loose at beginning.) 19th-century half calf (worn, covers detached). FIRST EDITION. An important document, in which Hastings sets out to justify his actions against Chait Singh, Raja of Benares, and the Wazir of Oudh. Apart from its historical importance, it may be considered to be the first major historical publication printed at the Honourable Company Press, Calcutta. Not in Lowndes. VERY RARE.

(Old repair to fold of map, a few plates with marginal tears, light marginal worming at end, some light browning and staining.) Provenance : Martin family ("Ham Court" armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION. KNOX'S CELEBRATED ACCOUNT OF HIS CAPTIVITY AND THE ISLAND OF SRI LANKA. The work enjoyed a swift success, due to the accuracy and range of the information it contained. It informed Daniel Defoe's novels The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719) and The Life, Adventures and Pyracies of the Famous Captain Singleton (1720).
