Provenance : Baprissa Vailasi (early ownership inscription on preliminary blank). Carlo Borromeo (canonized 1610) was a nephew of Pius IV, who created him cardinal at the age of twenty-two and archbishop of Milan at twenty-five; he is regarded as a principal leader of the Counter-Reformation. The Decree XL of the Synod provides for the censorship of books: ff. 38-68 reprint the "Index Librorum Prohibitorum cum regulis confectis, per Patres a Tridentina Synodo delectos, auctoritate Pii IIII." Milan at that time belonged to Philip II of Spain who had introduced the Inquisition there in 1563. Although the BL owns a copy of the above first edition, the Biblioteca Trivulziana, Milan, only has the reprint of 1573 (Giulia Bologna, no. 313).
