Title: Index Librorum Prohibitorum Sanctissimi Domini Nostri Gregorii XVI Pontificis Maximi jussu editus Author: Place: Romae [Rome] Publisher: Ex Typographia Reverendae Camerae Apostolicae Date: 1841 Description: xlviii, 422 pp + numerous later additions at rear. With engraved frontispiece, illustrated title page. (8vo) 20x13 cm (8x5"), half vellum and marbled boards, gilt decorated spine, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Scarce. Listing of books banned by Pope Gregory XVI, as the Catholic Church believed they were a danger to the faith of its members, as the works were considered either immoral or contained theological errors. Nearly every two or three months the Papal authority added new publications to the list. The list was begun by Pope Paul IV in 1559 and abolished by Pope Paul VI in 1966. Though the publication date of this volume is 1841, it contains additions through 1852. Lot Amendments Condition: Soiling to vellum, rubbing to boards, bump to top corner of front board; ownership signatures on front pastedown, interior solid; very good. Item number: 287358
