Beschreibung:

i) MARTIN, Capt. Henry Byam (1803-1865). Autograph naval logbook and journal signed ("Captain H.B. Martin") recording the period February 1846 - 8 October 1848, approximately 69 pages, 4, calf-backed boards (scuffed). A detailed record of Captain Martin's voyage around Cape Horn aboard H.M.S Grampus , including nautical tables, graphs and personal "remarks" on his journey and the various harbours visited including: on Tahiti: "The harbour in the islands of Bora Bora is magnificent, capable of holding any number of ships" (November 1846); on the Western coast of Mexico: "I believe there are no secure harbours for a large ship, except Acapulco and Guaymas; but the weather between the full moon in November and the full moon in June is so constantly fine that a ship may anchor in safety in almost any part of the coast" (early 1848). ii) An early journal by Martin, 8, half calf (scuffed), circa 356 pages, describing his trip with a friend in 1834 to Europe including Holland, the Rhinelands, Italy, Malta and Egypt. iii) A journal by an unknown writer appointed Major General for a Regiment in Ireland in the Cork district covering the period April 1889 to October 1890 including: "a long talk with Prince Edward [Edward VII] about improvement I wish to make in the district. He cordially approves of everything I suggested and was very complimentary about all I have been doing" (October 29 1890). iv) A vellum-bound autograph book of armorial crests, other loose pages and notelets, some inscribed by Martin and one signed ("Fred Leighton").
