Danorum historiae libri XVI...Des. Erasmi Roterodami de Saxone censura. Basel: Johannes Bebel 1534. 2 vols. in one, folio, 303 x 195 mm. (11 15/16 x 7¾ in.), contemporary blind-tooled quarter pigskin over beech boards, original brass catches, one brass and leather clasp remaining, original leather index tabs, title lettered on fore-edge, vellum spine linings from a 12th-century missal with neumes (front) and from a 14th-century theological(?) text, occasional dampstaining to fore-margins, world map detached, torn and repaired at folds, small hole at center with loss, borders shaved, 2 small stains, minor creasing . Adams S-531. The principal source for Shakespeare's Hamlet . One of the earliest collections of voyages, compiled by Johann Huttich, with a preface by Simon Grynaeus (to whom the work is sometimes erroneously attributed), containing the voyages of Columbus, Cadomosto, Vespucci, Cabral, and part of the Fourth Decade of Peter Martyr, as well as additional non-American voyages. The map, showing the Americas as two separate continents separated by a strait, the northernmost an elongated island labeled "Terra de Cuba", is "geographically... quite antiquated and was probably prepared prior to 1532 [date of the first edition] based partly on the world configuration depicted in the Schöner globes, or on Apian's map of 1520" (Shirley). Provenance : Early inscriptions on title-page: "Ex bibliotheca Fran. Raufferi(?)" (crossed out) -- "Ex libris Principissae Piccoliminiae Bibliothecae Slacoveriensis Scholarum Piarum" a few early marginalia.
