HUSBANDRY -- The Country-mans Recreation , including: Thomas BARKER The Art of Angling . London: T. Mabb [and William Hunt] for William Shears, 1654. 4 parts in one, 4° (184 x 135mm). General title, separate title to three parts, woodcut illustrations of grafting, pruning, and planting, including 22 full-page, 20pp. book advertisements for Peter Parker. (Some light spotting.) Early Contemporary calf, marbled edges (extremities rubbed). Provenance : J. Emmarton (flyleaf signature). Second edition of this compilation, of special importance for the final part, Thomas Barker's The Art of Angling : a rare pre-Waltonian treatise, which is included for the first time. The Country-Mans Recreation had first been published in three parts in 1640, too early for the inclusion of Barker's work which was first issued separately in 1651 and 1653. It here retains the 1653 title-page, and has separate pagination and register. The other three parts had also appeared separately. The first is an anonymous reprint of 'A booke of the art and maner howe to plant and graffe all sortes of trees' by Leonard Mascall. Book 2 is an anonymous reprint of 'A perfite platform of a hoppe garden' by Reginald Scot, with a separate title page dated 1653. Book 3 is a reissue of 'The expert gardener' (STC 11562), with separate title-page dated 1654; this also has separate pagination and register. Henrey I, 48; Satchell and Westwood p. 21; Wing B-784. LAWSON, William (fl. 1618). A new orchard, and garden, or the best way for planting, grafting, and to make any ground good, for a rich orchard . London: W. Wilson for John Harison, 1648. 4° (180 x 138mm). (Without final blank, lightly browned.) 18th-century sprinkled sheep, gilt fillet (spine worn, endpaper loose). Provenance : William Charles de Meuron, 7th Earl Fitzwilliam (1872-1943, bookplate). Wing L-730. (2)
