HUNT, Leigh (1784-1859). Autograph manuscript, 'The Fabulous World No.1. The Gods of Antiquity, Philosophically and Poetically Considered', in Hunt's fine small hand, with emendations and cancellations, sent together with an autograph letter signed to [William Tait], n.p., n.d. [15 March 1833], written at the foot of the last page, together 4 pages, folio , address panel (discolouration to address panel, light staining and small tear from seal). Hunt considers the absence 'in so poetical a country as Great Britain' of a comprehensive work on the pagan pantheon, and endeavours to lay the foundation of such a work, with an extended consideration of the poems of Milton, but also with reference to Wordsworth and Shelley; the letter, to the editor of Tait's Edinburgh Magazine , for which the article was written, responds to criticisms and explains the perplexities which have led to the delay of a further article. In a letter to Tait of 9 April 1832, Hunt had referred to this work, though at that stage doubting if it would be suitable for magazine publication: 'I have some manuscript by me ... part of a regular work upon fictitious beings of all kinds ... [which] I believe is of a comprehensive kind such as never has been published yet ... but my friends tell me I must not send the chapters to a magazine under the price of articles written expressly for it'.
