HUGO Hermannus Pia desideria emblematis elegiis & affectibus .... Engraved titlepage, dedicatory arms of Pope Urban VIII, with 46 full page woodcut emblems by Christopher a Sichem, 3 section titles within elaborate woodcut borders, 26 tailpieces, contemporary vellum, 16mo., Antwerp: typis Henrici Aertssenii, 1628 Note: De Backer-Sommervogel IV H. Hugo 6; Landwehr 239 This is the second Antwerp edition, pirated from the first edition published in 1624 which was sponsored by the Jesuits and published by P.I.Paets. This is the first edition illustrated by Christopher a Sichem. The emblems represent two children, Anima (the soul) and Divine Love (Baby Jesus) depicting the search of the human soul for holiness. The texts are mainly from the Song of Songs and the Psalms, the emblem explanations are in neo-Latin verse.
