HUGHES, John T. (1817-1862). Cincinnati: U.P. James, [ca 1851]. 8 o (237 x 148 mm). (Some foxing.) Original pink printed wrappers (some minor edgewear); dark-blue quarter morocco slipcase. The first edition of this work appeared in 1847 with a quick succession of editions following celebrating the exploits of Alexander William Doliphan. At the outbreak of the war with Mexico in May 1846, Doniphan organized the First Regiment of Missouri Mounted Volunteers at the request of Governor John C. Edwards and was elected its colonel. At the pass of the Sacramento in late February 1847 Doniphan encountered a large force of Mexicans, which they routed, capturing large amounts of supplies. Doniphan lost only one man while the Mexicans counted 304 dead. Howes H-769.
