Hugh Douglas Hamilton (Irish, 1739-1808) Portrait of Lord Henry FitzGerald (1761-1829) pastel h:23 w:19 cm Provenance: The Dukes of Leinster and by descent. In the Catalogue of Pictures and Antiquities at Carton, 1885, pp.33-35 in the Duke's Study amongst 28 oval portraits by Hugh Douglas Hamilton No.5. The identity of the sitter has now been recognised as Lord Henry FitzGerald (1761-1829), a younger brother of the 2nd Duke of Leinster. One of seventeen children of the 1st Duke, he was, through his mother, Lady Emily Gordon-Lennox, a great great grandson of Charles II. He married in 1791 Charlotte Boyle (1771-1831) in whose favour the ancient Barony of de Ros was called out of abeyance (since 1687) in 1806. Together they had six sons and five daughters. Lord Henry was the fourth son of the 1st Duke of Leinster and in October 1777 was appointed Cornet in the 3rd Regiment of Horse (or Carabineers) in Ireland and it is in their red uniform with white facings, no lace and one epaulette on the left shoulder, that he is wearing in this portrait which can be very precisely dated, as the sitter transferred in November 1778 to the 66th Foot. Estimate £6,000-8,000 Condition appears fine.
