Engraved frontispiece from the Bettsworth edition of 1710, depicting hunting, shooting, cock-fighting, bowling, fishing, and billiards, final advert. leaf K6, 2 additional advertisement leaves at end. (Frontispiece window-mounted, lightly browned, some spotting or light soiling.) 18th-century sprinkled calf (rebacked in 19th century with gilt spine, corners bumped). Provenance : John Giston (inscriptions dated 1759/1769). FIRST EDITION of 'a scarce and comprehensive booklet on a great variety of British sports'. 'Ringing' in the title is bell-ringing, recommended for its harmony and mathematical invention, and complete with instructions and tables of peals such as those to cure a melancholy and for a wild-goose chase.
