HORROR FROM THE TOMB No. 1 Publisher: Premiere [Indicia: Premiere Magazines, Inc.] Date Published: September, 1954 Description: CGC certified: G/VG (3.0). Off-white to white pages. Cover: Grand Comics Database speculates that the cover is by George Woodbridge and Angelo Torres, but this was refuted by Mr. Torres himself in a recent email to PBA's Director of Comics: "Hi Ivan, I'm afraid Grand Comics Database is way off on this one. I had nothing to do with the inking of that cover and George Woodbridge's son, whom I just got off the phone with, says George didn't pencil it either." Art: John D'Agnostino, Carl Massey, Jack Abel, George Woodbridge and Angelo Torres (Mr. Torres confirms that the final story, "You Can't Keep a Good King Down," is indeed a collaboration between himself and Mr. Woodbridge: "I checked it out with Curtis Woodbridge and he thinks his dad penciled a lot of it and I helped with the inks and some of the drawing"). GPAnalysis: A 3.0 sold for $388 in April 2019; a 4.0 sold for $900 in August 2021. PBA sold a raw 2.0 for $687.50 in February 2022. Horror from the Tomb was a shameless attempt to cash in on EC's success, from its "Tales from the Crypt"-derivative title to its Crypt Keeper-clone of a host (the "Keeper of the Graveyard"). Even the publisher's emblem was designed to mimic the EC insignia. The publisher, Premiere Magazines, was a fly-by-night operator that sprang up in 1953-54 with a lineup of western, crime, romance and humor comics. Horror from the Tomb only lasted one issue before the Comics Code laid it in its grave, although it hobbled along under the title "Mysterious Stories" for a few tepid Code-approved issues. This mag's final story imitates EC's "Grim Fairy Tales" format ("Grandma Gruesome's Dead Time Story"), and the story by EC/MAD alums George Woodbridge and Angelo Torres is outstanding, a rare example of a non-EC terror tale that would have been right at home in an EC mag. "HORROR FROM THE TOMB is a must-have for all pre-Code horror collectors. But it can be a tough book to find these days." — Roger Hill, preeminent EC scholar and co-publisher of Squa Tront, in an "EC Fan-Addict Club" Facebook post, May 10, 2021. Enjoying the Sale?
