Ilbert (1888-1956) was one of the major horological collectors and authorities of the 20th century. His vast library was bequeathed to the British Horological Institute and a Tompion longcase clock to the National Maritime Museum but the rest of his collection was sent for auction. A public subscription was organized by the Clockmakers' Company and the collection was saved for the nation.
