HORATIUS Flaccus, Quintus (65-8 B.C.). [ Opera ]. Paris: Pierre Didot the Elder, at his Louvre Press, 1799. Large 2 (483 x 341 mm). Half title. Engraved vignette on title and 11 engraved head-piece vignettes (some occasional foxing). Contemporary English straight grained red morocco by H. Walther, both covers elaborately gilt with central arms of the Duke of Devonshire, spine gilt, elaborately gilt turn-ins, silk endpapers, g.e. (binder's label, slightly bumped). Provenance : Dukes of Devonshire, Chatsworth Library (armorial bookplate; sale Christie's 30 September 1981, lot 233). FINE BINDING ON A MASTERPIECE OF NEO-CLASSICAL TYPOGRAPHY. Number 201 of a limited edition of 250 copies, all signed and numbered by Didot at the end of the preface. "In France the typographic event of the close of the century was the appearance of Pierre Didot's ditions du Louvre of Horace and Virgil" (Updike). The type has a classical, incised quality that is enhanced by the striking headpieces designed by the architect Charles Percier one of the leading exponents of the Empire style.
