A collection of eleven letters, the majority addressed to Joseph Hume MP, 15 May 1850 - 18 July 1854, relating to HIS ATTEMPTS TO OBTAIN A PENSION FOR HORATIA NELSON, and comprising letters from: Horatio, 3rd Earl Nelson. Two letters signed (one autograph), the first 15 May 1850, on news that 'Mrs Ward & her family ... are, I regret to say, in a very distressed condition', on his sympathies for 'Horatia, whom all who reverence my great Uncle's memory must feel for', putting forward the private statement that 'the family always were, and I believe, still are, quite certain that Horatia is not Lady Hamilton's daughter; in fact, they have very certain proof that she never had one ...', defending the family's conduct towards Emma and Horatia, and emphasising his own slender means, at £1,000 per annum, given 'the necessary expenses of my position in Society', 7 pages, 8vo ; the second 26 June [1853] reiterating his aunt's belief that 'Lady Hamilton never had a child', 4 pages, 8vo ; and letters by Bulwer LYTTON, 1st Baron Lytton (2 autograph letters signed, 'It would give me pleasure if any thing practical can be done on behalf of Lord Nelson's adopted Child', and later declining to join the committee), Edward, 14th Earl of Derby (describing the petition as 'absolutely hopeless'), George, 4th Earl of Aberdeen (3 autograph letters, one in third person, informing Hume that the Cabinet declines to propose anything to the House of Commons, but offering a civil list pension of £300), M.G. Graham at the Admiralty (2, of which a letter of 9 June 1853 gives the news that Mr Nelson Ward is to be awarded an appointment in the office of the Registrar of the Court of Chancery worth, eventually, £2,000) and others.
