Pigouchet's woodcut device (Renouard 919), woodcut of Anatomical man, woodcut of the Holy Grail in the form of Christ's wound, 14 nearly full-page metalcuts (Fairfax Murray set 2) and 31 small cuts, metalcut historiated and ornamental borders on every page, a few with criblé grounds, including Pigouchet's Dance of Death series (Claudin II, 53-53), with 30 male subjects, repeated once, and 9 female subjects. One 4-line, numerous 2- and 3-line initial spaces and spaces for initials within the line. 4-line initial in blue with white modelling, the remaining initials, paragraph marks and line fillers illuminated in gold on alternating red and blue grounds, yellow capital-strokes, red-ruled. (Lacking text leaf f8, border of a2r cropped, small rubbed areas to d5r and k5r, initial on d5r rubbed out, occasional light staining or discoloration.) In the long series of Pigouchet-Vostre Books of Hours, this edition is apparently the second, following that of 22 May 1496, to be illustrated with Pigouchet's second series of large metalcuts (Fairfax-Murray set 2), larger in size and more finely executed than the rather crude series of cuts used before 1496 (cf. Fairfax Murray French I, 253 and p. 289). Most of the metalcut borders, including Pigouchet's fine Dance of Death suite, were also introduced in 1496. The complete suite of the Dance of Death includes 30 male and 30 female subjects; in this edition, only nine female subjects appear before the full male series is repeated, implying that the suite may not yet have been completed. In later editions the ogival arches or criblé ornamentation separating the scenes in the borders were replaced by typeset text. Like other Parisian Books of Hours of the 1490s, the signature line on the first leaf of each quire includes an initial indicating the use to which the sheets belong (e.g., "R" for Rome), necessitated by the accelerated rate of production in the printing shops specializing in Books of Hours. The almanac was apparently kept standing in type for use in several Pigouchet editions of 1496 and 1497 (cf. BMC VIII, 117, IA. 40323).
