HORAE, use of Rome in Latin and French. [Paris: Simon Vostre c.1514]. PRINTED ON VELLUM. 8° (185 x 112mm). Collation: a-c 8 d 4 e-p 8 á é í 8. 138 leaves (of 140, lacking first and last leaves). Quires a-e printed 21 lines per page in a Pigouchet type (99:batarde) and the remaining quires 22 lines per page in a Vostre type (95:batarde), the rite indicated on quires e-p, metalcut anatomical man, 19 full-page metalcuts, 5 signed with monogram (see below), within composite architectural frame, 29 small metalcuts, each page with composite historiated and ornamental border, initials, paragraph marks and line-filler in gold on alternating pink or blue ground (first and last page lightly soiled, marginal tear in penultimate leaf). 19th-Century English olive straight-grained morocco, gilt spine, gilt edges (a little rubbed, slight wear at corners). Provenance : Charles Barclay (bookplate). Two unusual characteristics ally this edition with one printed for Vostre c.1514. One, the first 4 quires are printed in an earlier type than the other quires, and two, it contains metalcuts from Vostre's set 5, used in editions with almanacs dated 1513 and later, together with cuts from his set 3. Set 5 is distinct in its Germanic influence, and five of the cuts bear monograms: G, GF and VII (or some combination), leading some to attribute them to Geoffrey Tory. The border decoration is particularly rich and includes Germanic renaissance decoration as well as a multitude of historiated scenes. See Davies, Murray French , 260 for an edition sharing the type distinction and combination of metalcuts; cf. Brunet Heures 95. Probably Lacombe 258 (describing a very imperfect copy); Brunet Heures 96; Van Praet Roi , 175.
