Collation : a-c 8 d 4 e-r 8 + 8 . 140 leaves. Pigouchet's woodcut device (Renouard 919), woodcut of Anatomical man, 20 large woodcuts and 27 miniatures, woodcut historiated and ornamental borders on every page, ALL ILLUMINATED IN COLORS AND GOLD. Initials, paragraph marks and line fillers illuminated in gold on alternating red and blue grounds, red-ruled. Early 17th-century French gold-tooled olive morocco, decorated to a fanfare design, sides elaborately gold-tooled with frame of small geometrical borders and a second frame of small floral stamps each between double gilt fillets, a central panel with corner ornaments of intertwined floral sprays circling small floral stamps, large central fusil-shaped ornament of similar branches and sprays with plain central oval, smooth spine with design of laurel sprays and small roses bordered with a band of small single floral tools, edges gilt (a few discreet repairs); cloth slipcase. Provenance : John Ellman Brown Shoreham (bookplate); Carl Pforzheimer; acquired from Bernard Quaritch, 1986. A FINELY COLORED BOOK OF HOURS, and in a fine binding decorated in the style of Clovis Eve The calendar is for the years 1502 to 1520. Brunet 56.
