HORAE B.M.V. Horae deipare virginis Marie secundum usum Romanum . Paris: Thielman Kerver, 1519 [almanac 1519-1538]. PRINTED ON VELLUM. 8° (164 x 105mm), 67 leaves only (of 132): a 8 , b8, c1, d1, 6, 8, e2, 4, f4, 5, g6, 7, 8, h-l 8 , m1-6,8, n1-6,8, q2. 26 lines, Kerver's unicorn device on A1, the anatomical man on verso and 39 three-quarter-page plates within very fine historiated metal-cut borders each with vignettes in compartments, and 20 pages with borders only, the space for the text unprinted and left blank. Calendar with vignettes of the signs and occupations of the months. 18th-century calf gilt, foot of spine very worn. UNRECORDED, but this appears to be a REMARKABLE TRIAL PROOF of the plates only for Kerver's 1520 Horae with mostly unusually fine impressions of the plates. The cycle of illustrations in this Book of Hours is very rich, perhaps fuller than any other of the early 16th century and contains many unusual images such as 'the three living and the three dead' on two facing pages, 'Birth and Death' and 'World, Flesh and Devil', as well as 7 plates illustrating the Psalms of David. A full list is to be found in Mortimer, Harvard French pp. 371, 375 and 378. In spite of its apparent incompleteness, all except four of the plates are in fact present in this volume. The text was apparently inserted later into the spaces left blank. Cf. Lacombe 298; Brunet Heures 195; Bohatta 1036.
