This edition enjoyed a great vogue in France, for “its vignettes make it one of the few English books that can be compared with French work of the time for delicacy and finish” (Bland). Two volumes bound in one, octavo (140 x 223mm). Early 19th-century full green morocco gilt, spine richly gilt in compartments, gilt edges, red silk doublures. Provenance : loosely inserted slip of contemporary notes on the edition in French (unsigned), and a slightly later full page of notes in an early 19th-century hand (contemporary to the binding) – The Helmut N. Friedlaender Collection.
