HOOKE, ROBERT. Micrographia. London: Printed for John Martyn 1667. Folio, 299 x 195mm. (11 3/4 x 7 5/8in.), English early nineteenth-century russia, gilt and blind-panelled, rebacked with original backstrip laid down, corners renewed, folding plate 4 with single 5-inch tear, folding plates 34, 35 and 38 with smaller tears and old repairs, small single tears at fold corners of 11 other folding plates, mostly slight and not affecting images, plate 27 just shaved at fore-edge. FIRST EDITION, Second Issue with the first edition sheets re-issued with a new title and its conjugate (containing the Royal Society's order for the book to be printed), Keynes's imprint b (with John Martyn's name only), the plates reprinted, title printed in black with engraved armorial vignette, 38 engraved plates, 21 of them folding. Keynes Hooke 7b; Wing H2621. The Great Fire of 1666 destroyed Allestry's premises and this second issue was published either with the names Martyn and Allestry or with Martyn's name alone. Although the text sheets are those of the 1665 first edition, the plates in this copy were evidently reprinted. Provenance : Harrison D. Horblit, bookplate.
