Copper-engraved double-hemisphere map of the world, hand-colored; two uncolored pictorial cartouches. 51x59 cm. (20x23") Double hemisphere world map, with four polar spheres, each in a different projection, and two diagrams of the solstices, depicting the earth as it would be seen from space. This is a later issue of the map, produced around 1760, but of some significance, with detail and place names in North America above California giving early indication of Russian exploration. There is the notation "Littora Americana Russica" and other signs of Russian exploration, with an early Alaskan Peninsula based on Mueller's important map. Hudson Bay is closed in the northwest corner. In Oceania there are partial coastlines of New Zealand and Australia. The large, decorative cartouches contain the titles, the one in Latin featuring mythical sea creatures and the other in French surrounded by fruit and animals representing the bounty of the earth.
