Beschreibung:

American, mid-19th century. Three hollow-cut silhouettes housed in one ebonized and églomisé frame, purportedly depicting Chauncey Meigs Hand, his brother Charles Fowler Hand, and a third man at center, purported to be either their father Joseph Winborn Hand or their uncle Return Jonathan Meigs; 5.75 x 8.75 in. (sight), 7 x 10 in. (frame). Chauncey Meigs Hand was born in 1828 in Washington, D.C. and was a graduate of Yale College. His father, Joseph Winborn Hand was born in 1792 and died in 1844. Return Jonathan Meigs III (1801-1898) was a Tennessee lawyer and politician. He was the son of Return Jonathan Meigs, Jr., who served as Ohio's fourth governor. His father, Return Jonathan Meigs, Sr., was a colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and one of the settlers in the Northwest Territory now known as Ohio. Additionally, he helped found Marietta, Ohio. Later in his life, he served as an Indian agent in Tennessee, working with the Cherokee. Based on the ages indicated above each silhouette, however, the identity of the oldest sitter remains unclear, as neither J. W. Hand nor R. J. Meigs would have been 65 when Chauncey was 20. PLUS, a smaller silhouette depicting a man; 3.75 x 2.75 in. (sight), 4.75 x 3.75 in. (frame).
