Frellon's woodcut crab and butterfly device on title (Baudrier 1) and at end (Baudrier 3); 53 woodcuts after Holbein, cut by Hans Lützelburger 19th-century dark green morocco gilt, edges gilt, by Trautz-Bauzonnet (joints rubbed). Provenance : Edmund Sydney Williams (bookplate); acquired from Philip Hofer, 1963. THE FIRST AUTHORISED EDITION IN ITALIAN OF THE 'DANCE OF DEATH' WITH THE HOLBEIN CUTS. The finely drawn woodcuts were a considerable technical achievement and formed the basis of illustrations to the Dance of Death for several centuries. Holbein's delicate style of illustration was followed by Jöst Amman particularly in Schopper's Panoplia (1568), his work on professions and trades. The first edition of the Holbein illustrations appeared in 1538 and contained only 41 cuts. The present edition contains the full set of 53 cuts which had first appeared in 1545 (see Woltmann, Holbein , II, p. 177d). The second part of the book contains religious texts in Italian: La medicina de l'anima and La maniera del consolar gl'infermi together with sermons of Saints Cyprian and John Chrysostom. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current only one copy has appeared at auction in over thirty-five years. (See lots 34 and 35.)
