Captain White sailed from Salem for the Far East in 1819. His was among the first American vessels to ascend the Dong Nai River to Saigon, and he spent a considerable amount of time in that city. His account includes a great deal of information on Vietnam and the Vietnamese, and on Batavia and the Philippines. The "Map of the River of Don-Nai from Cape St. James to the City of Saigon" is after the original produced by M. Dayot in 1791, here updated with information gleaned from the expedition. Lot Amendments Condition: Front board detached, rear joint tender and starting, rubbing and wear along edges; some damp staining and occasional smudging, particularly blank pages, textblock faintly toned; very good internally in need of repair.
