Captain White sailed from Salem for the Far East in 1819. His was among the first American vessels to ascend the Dong Nai River to Saigon, and he spent a considerable amount of time in that city. His account includes a great deal of information on Vietnam and the Vietnamese, and on Batavia and the Philippines. The "Map of the River of Don-Nai from Cape St. James to the City of Saigon" is after the original produced by M. Dayot in 1791, here updated with information gleaned from the expedition.
