Place: Madid Publisher: Imprenta de Vega y Compania, Calle de Capellanes Date: 1804-05 Description: 5 volumes. 400 engraved plates interleaved with descriptive letterpress, 35 of which have been hand-colored. 17.4x11 cm. (7x4½"), later calf-backed green cloth. First Edition. Fabulous series of plates depicting the costume of the nations of the world, with descriptive text as to the customs of the various countries. Quite scarce, WorldCat locates only 5 copies, 2 in Spain, 1 in Great Britain, and 2 in the United States. According to ABPC, no copies have appeared at auction in at least the past 30 years. Lot Amendments Condition: Evidence of former institutional ownership (removed bookplates and card pockets, small ink stamps at head of first text leaf in each volume), plates not marked. Some wear to extremities; faint marginal staining to a few leaves; plates overall clean. Item number: 210352
