HIRSCH, Paul -- Katalog der Musikbibliothek Paul Hirsch. Edited by Kathi Meyer und Paul Hirsch. Berlin: Martin Breslauer (printed by Poeschel & Trepte, Leipzig), 1928-1930 (vols. I & II), Frankfurt am Main (printed by Poeschel & Trepte), 1936 (vol. III), Cambridge, University Press, 1947 (vol. IV). 4 volumes. Small 2 o. 132 plates. Original quarter vellum, vellum corners, black morocco lettering pieces, top edges gilt. Provenance : MARTIN BRESLAUER & OTTO HAAS (valuation of the Paul Hirsch Library. London, 1937, manuscripts prices throughout). LIMITED EDITION, one of 300 copies. This is the copy used by Martin Breslauer for the valuation of the Hirsch Library, undertaken jointly with Otto Haas during the last months of 1937 in London for insurance purposes. Martin Breslauer has entered in pencil the valuation of each item in Vols. I-III, arrived at in consultation with Haas; in many cases he has also added price records of other copies. For their efforts, Paul Hirsch awarded them an honorarium of £30 each. They also valued the material to be described in the planned fourth volume, including acquisitions since 1936. The total valuation amounted to £51,723 10s. - Paul (Adolf) Hirsch (Frankfurt, 1881-Cambridge, 1951) was one of the most important private collectors of music of all time; his collection contained more than 18,000 items, of which only the most important were described in his four-volume catalogue; musical literature and secondary music were excluded, and only appear in the two British Library catalogues, 1951-1959. A man of great personal charm who bore his wide knowledge lightly, he was also a musician of more than passable accomplishment, on the violin and viola. Although music was his main field of collecting, he also built outstanding collections of German classical literature in first editions (now at Harvard), incunabula in contemporary bindings, illustrated books, and, together with his wife Olga, née Ladenburg, a notable collection of fine bindings from the Renaissance to modern times. On emigrating to Cambridge in 1935, he miraculously succeeded in saving all his collections, depositing his music library on loan in Cambridge University Library where he made it available to students of music. In 1946 it was acquired by the nation and now forms part of the British Library. The price was £120,000, £30,000 less than, he let it be known, he would have asked an American institution, in gratitude to his adopted country. For this act of generosity he was officially thanked during the debate on the purchase in the House of Commons (a portion of the price was contributed by the Pilgrim Trust). The catalogue forms the second series of the "Veröffentlichungen der Musikbibliothek Paul Hirsch" Laid into volume I is 'Two Addresses delivered at the Funeral of Paul Hirsch, 28 November 1951," by Lawrence Picken and Percy Muir (4 ff.). Also added are photostats of letters to "The Times" of London by Arnold Bax, Sir Adrian Boult, Myra Hess, Ralph Vaughan Williams, a.o., recommending the acquisition of the Hirsch Library. -- [ With: ] Catalogue of the Printed Music in the British Museum. Accessions Part 53-Music in the Hirsch Library. London, 1951. -- and 4 pamphlets. (4)
