EDITIO PRINCEPS OF THE HIPPOCRATIC CORPUS. Torresani based his redaction on a 15th-century manuscript, now Paris BnF gr.2141, making corrections from another, now Venice Marc. gr. 269, which had belonged to Cardinal Bessarion. The Aldine text marked a considerable advance over the manuscript from which Marco Fabio Calvo had done his Latin translation (published Rome: 1525). The Hippocratic corpus is a collection of medical writings assembled in the third century B.C., perhaps representing the contents of the library of the Hippocratic school of medicine associated with the healing shrine of the god Asclepius on Cos. There is no evidence that Hippocrates wrote any of them himself. The works cover surgery, epidemiology, pharmacology, embryology and anatomy, including treatises on prognosis and general health care. The Hippocratic Oath, expressing since Antiquity the fundamental ethical and moral standards of the medical profession, is here published as part of the preliminaries, separate from the main body of texts.
