HILL, Aaron (1685-1750). A Full and Just Account of the present state of the Ottoman Empire in all its branches. London: for the Author, to be sold by John Mayo, 1709. 2° (398 x 250mm) Engraved portrait frontispiece, 5 engraved plates only (of 7), each faced by an accompanying explanatory letterpress leaf. (Bound without preface, list of subscribers, 2 plates and their explanatory letterpress leaves.) Contemporary English red morocco gilt, covers elaborately panelled in gilt, the large central panel swarming with volutes, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt, gilt and gauffered edges (neatly rebacked with old spine laid down, re-cornered). Provenance : Margaret Graves (inscription dated 1792); Christopher Turnor (armorial bookplate of Stoke Rochford libarary). FIRST EDITION, A LARGE PAPER COPY BOUND FOR PRESENTATION. The missing plates and preliminary leaves were clearly never bound in, and their absence may be an indication of Hill's impatience to get presentation copies out to potentially influential patrons: i.e. the missing text and plates were not printed when the remaining sheets were sent to the binder. A second edition was published in 1710. Atabey 580; ESTC t107054.
