HEYRICK, Thomas (d. 1694). Miscellany Poems . Cambridge: by John Hayes for the author, 1691. 4 o (195 x 146 mm). Collation : A 4 , a-b 4 , B-Aa 4 . Woodcut Alma Mater device on title. (Title with slight tear at upper inner corner and small piece torn from upper blank margin, some light browning and spotting, mostly marginal, K1 with short marginal tear.) Late 19th-century half morocco, marbled boards. Provenance : R d . Halgood 1774 (ownership inscription on title) -- purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 17 April 1969. FIRST EDITION. Heyrick, curate of Market Harborough, was the grandson of Thomas Heyrick (or Herrick), elder brother of Robert Herrick (1591-1674), the poet (see lot 60). His Miscellany , dedicated to the Countess of Rutland, ends with a long Pindaric poem, "The Submarine Voyage," with its own title-page, dedication to the Earl of Rutland, and separate pagination. One of the commendatory verses is addressed "To my ingenious friend and brother angler" by Theophilus Judd of St. John's College, Cambridge, and "A Pindarique Ode in Praise of Angling" is among the shorter poems in the collection. In it, Heyrick "not only praises angling but abuses those who do not angle in vehement fashion." Other fanciful poems include "On a Flea presented to a Lady, whose breast it had bitten," "On an Ape," "On the Crocodile," "On a Pen," "The Norway Whale," "The Battle between a Cock and a Capon," "On a Robin-red-breast that for many years built and dwelt in a church," "On a Sunbeam," and "Advice to a Virgin." Hayward 134; Westwood and Satchell p. 118; Wing H1753. RARE.
